Cartridge vs. Caliber: Let's Talk Mags
One of the most common questions we get is about magazine compatibility.
Someone is setting up a new rifle, changing cartridges, or upgrading parts, and they want to make sure they’re choosing the correct mag for their setup.
And we get it:
In the shooting world, cartridge and caliber often get used interchangeably in everyday conversation.
But when it comes to magazines, they mean very different things.
Understanding that difference can make choosing the right magazine much simpler.
Because magazine fitment is based on cartridge family and cartridge geometry, not just caliber.
Cartridge vs. Caliber
Caliber is simply the bullet diameter.
That’s it.
Examples:
- .30 caliber
- 6.5mm
- .22 caliber
But multiple completely different cartridges can use the same caliber bullet.
For example:
- .308 Winchester
- .30-06 Springfield
- .300 Winchester Magnum
All use a .30 caliber projectile.
That does NOT mean they share the same magazine.
Because the cartridge itself includes:
- Case length
- Overall cartridge length
- Shoulder geometry
- Body taper
- Rim Diameter
That entire package determines how the cartridge stacks, feeds, and cycles through the magazine.
So when someone says:
“It’s a .30 cal.”
That doesn’t actually tell you what magazine you need.
Why Compatibility Can Get Confusing
A magazine is designed around a specific cartridge family and overall cartridge geometry.
That includes things like:
- Overall cartridge length
- Case shape
- Shoulder position
- Feed angle
- How the cartridges stack inside the mag
That’s why two cartridges that use the same caliber bullet may still require completely different magazines.
For example:
- .308 Winchester and .300 Winchester Magnum both use .30 caliber bullets
- But they do not share the same magazine platform
The goal isn’t to make things complicated.
It’s actually the opposite.
Once you know your exact cartridge, choosing the correct magazine becomes much more straightforward.
Mountain Tactical .223 Magazine
Designed for:
- .223 Remington family
Platform compatibility:
- Tikka T3
- Tikka T3x
Not compatible with:
- Tikka TAC-A1
- Tikka UPR
- Tikka CTR
This magazine is designed specifically around the .223 cartridge family.
While some cartridges may appear similar at first glance, cartridge geometry and overall length are what determine reliable fit and feeding.
One important note:
The 350 Legend is NOT based on the .223 Remington case family, and compatibility is not guaranteed. (Although it shares the same rim diameter as the .223, the body dimensions are entirely different.)
Mountain Tactical Short Action Magazine
Designed for:
- .308 family
- Creedmoor family
Platform compatibility:
- Tikka T3
- Tikka T3x
Not compatible with:
- Tikka TAC-A1
- Tikka UPR
- Tikka CTR
- 6.5prc cartridges
- 300wsm cartridges
- 270wsm cartridges
This is the most common cartridge family we see.
These cartridges share similar overall length and case geometry, allowing them to function reliably within the same magazine platform.
That’s why cartridge family matters when selecting the correct mag.
Another note: While 6.5PRC and WSM cartridges may have a traditional short action case overall length (COAL) - the rim diameter and case taper are larger, and match traditional magnum cartridge deimensions instead of standard short action cartidge dimensions.
Mountain Tactical Long Action Magazine
Designed for:
- .300 WinMag family
- 30-06 Springfield family
Platform compatibility:
- Tikka T3
- Tikka T3x
Not compatible with:
- Tikka TAC-A1
- Tikka UPR
- Tikka CTR
Long action and magnum cartridges require a completely different magazine setup due to their increased overall length and geometry.
That’s why they require a dedicated long action magazine platform.
The Easy Way to Think About It
Here’s the simplest way to think about magazine compatibility:
Your magazine matches your cartridge family.
Not your caliber.
If you know your exact cartridge, choosing the correct magazine becomes straightforward.
If you’re unsure, start by checking the exact cartridge stamped on your barrel.
Not just the caliber.
